2phase-frictional-viscous-model - Micromechanics-based Model for a Two-phase Subduction Shear Zone

This micromechanics-based model uses a Mori-Tanaka approach to calculate the bulk rheology of a two-phase subduction shear zone containing ellipsoidal amphibolite clasts within an interconnected phyllosilicate-dominated matrix. This model considers the fictional-viscous-mixed behaviour. Local frictional failure occurs if the local stress in a clast and/or the matrix attains the Mohr-Coulomb yield strength. We neglect any rate-dependent friction and effectively assume that the viscous deformation dampens any acceleration that may occur in local frictional failure. We do, however, obtain conditions for when the bulk rheology switches from frictional-viscous flow to system-wide frictional sliding but cannot define the slip speed of such frictional sliding.
