Full-Context Help Assistant
This application provides an interactive help assistant for technical documentation. It's designed to provide accurate answers by sending the full documentation context to the AI model. The example config is for cosmology tools (CAMB, GetDist, and Cobaya), but the framework can be trivally adapted for any technical documentation.

This application was built using NextJS + ReactJS + TypeScript and supports multiple AI providers through a unified API interface.
Configuration Options
This application supports multiple AI providers and models through a unified API interface. Configuration is managed through the config.json file:
Supported AI Providers
OpenAI Models
- Uses the OpenAI Chat Completions API with full context documentation
- Models:
gpt-4.1-mini-2025-04-14,o4-mini, etc.
Gemini Models
- Supports Google's Gemini models through the OpenAI-compatible API
- Available models: flash and Pro
OpenRouter
- Provides access to a wide range of models through a unified API
- Includes models like DeepSeek, Claude, and others, where context large enough for use case
Important Note on Context Length
When selecting models, ensure they have sufficient context length to handle your entire documentation. The full-context approach requires models that can process large amounts of text (typically 100K+ tokens). Models with insufficient context length will not be able to process the entire documentation, resulting in incomplete or inaccurate responses.
Recommended minimum context lengths: - For small documentation: 16K tokens - For medium documentation: 32K tokens - For large documentation: 128K+ tokens
You can switch between models in the UI based on your needs for speed, accuracy, and context length capacity.
UI Configuration Options
The application supports several UI configuration options in config.json:
- showContextLink: When set to
false, hides the context download link in the UI - simpleMode: When set to
true, hides all top panels (description, tabs, doc links, theme toggle, model selection) when there's only one program configured. This is useful for embedding the chat interface in other applications, even when multiple models are configured for fallback purposes. - greeting: Customizes the greeting message displayed at the start of the chat. Defaults to "How can I help you?"
URL Parameters
The application supports several URL parameters for customization:
- theme: Set to
darkorlightto override the theme preference - scale: Set to a decimal value (e.g.,
0.8) to scale the UI elements - greeting: Override the greeting message displayed at the start of the chat
- context: Add additional context information that will be included in the system prompt
Running the Application
- Ensure you have Node.js installed
- Clone this repository
- Install dependencies:
npm install - Configure your API keys as environment variables: ``` # For OpenAI export OPENAIAPIKEY='your-openai-api-key-here'

Note: Only configure the API keys for the providers you plan to use.
5. Build the context files:
node scripts/build-context.js && node scripts/generate-context-module.js
6. Run the development server:
npm run dev
7. Open http://localhost:3000 in your browser
This can all be done automatically using e.g. vercel to host, building on a github push trigger.
Customizing the Application
Adding New Documentation Sets
To add support for additional documentation sets:
- Update the configuration in
config.jsonby adding a new entry to theprogramsarray. You can use either local context files or a URL-based context file:

If using local context files, add documentation files for your program in the

URL-Based Context Files
Using URL-based context files offers several advantages:
- Always Up-to-Date: The context is loaded directly from the URL, ensuring it's always the latest version
- No Local Storage Required: No need to store context files in your repository
- Simplified Deployment: No need to rebuild the application when documentation changes
- Automatic Preloading: Context files are preloaded when a tab becomes active for better performance
When using URL-based context files:
- Set contextFiles to an empty array []
- Set combinedContextFile to the URL of your documentation file
- The URL must be publicly accessible and return plain text or markdown content
- The content is cached in memory after the first load to improve performance
Modifying the UI
The UI components are located in the app/ui directory. Key components:

Adding New Models

Deployment
This application can be deployed to Vercel with minimal configuration:
- Connect your GitHub repository to Vercel
- Configure the environment variables for your API keys
- Deploy the application
The build process will automatically generate the combined context files during deployment.
Security
API Protection
The chat API endpoint (/api/unified-chat) is automatically protected from external access to prevent unauthorized usage of your LLM services and avoid unexpected API costs.
How it works: - Internal requests (from the web application itself) are automatically allowed - External requests (from other domains/applications) are blocked with a 403 Forbidden response
This protection is always active and requires no configuration. The web interface will work normally while preventing external API abuse.
Development Best Practices
To ensure code quality and prevent build errors, follow these best practices when contributing to this project:
Type Checking
Always run type checking before committing changes:

When modifying the config.json file or the Config interface in app/utils/types.ts, validate that they remain compatible:

- Response Time: Models with larger contexts may have slightly longer response times
Alternative Approaches
If your documentation is too large for even the largest context windows, consider:
- Hybrid Approach: Use RAG for the initial retrieval, then provide the relevant sections as context
- Documentation Splitting: Split your documentation into logical sections and provide a navigation interface
- Specialized Models: Train specialized models for different sections of your documentation
