pypsa-ph - PyPSA-PH v1.0: Introducing Open-Source Modeling to the Philippines

PyPSA-PH v1.0 Release Notes

Release Date: June 2024

Overview

PyPSA-PH v1.0 is the first public release of the high-resolution, open-source power system model for the Philippines, built on the PyPSA framework. This version is designed for research, planning, and scenario analysis to support the integration of renewable energy, grid modernization, and sustainable energy policy in the Philippines.

Key Features

  • High Spatial Resolution:

    • 192 nodes/buses
    • 425 generation units
    • 236 transmission lines
    • 25 storage units
    • Demand data benchmarked for the year 2023
  • Flexible Aggregation:
Supports multiple spatial aggregation schemes (trading node, administrative, provincial, district).

  • Sub-daily Temporal Resolution:
1-hourly time steps for the entire year.

  • Data-Driven:
Uses actual Philippine system data for network topology, generation, storage, and time series.

  • Scenario Analysis:
Built-in functions for projecting demand growth, CO₂ reduction, and hydrogen sector coupling.

  • Rich Visualization:
Includes plots for network topology, dispatch, generation mix, LCOE, emissions, and more.

Important Notes

  • Model Structure:
The baseline model is composed of 192 buses, 425 generators, 236 lines, and 25 storage units, providing a detailed representation of the Philippine power system.

  • Data Requirements:
Input data (CSV, shapefiles) must be placed in the data/ directory as referenced in the notebook.

  • Scenario Functions:
Future scenario simulations are supported, but require significant memory. Run scenarios individually and export results for analysis.

  • Ongoing Work:
The PyPSA-PH model is currently being documented and prepared for publication. A research paper is in progress—users are encouraged to cite the forthcoming paper and contact the author for collaboration or feedback.
