About the Repository

The Lexicon of Scholarly Editing is an open academic resource for definitions of concepts that are relevant to the field of Scholarly Editing. Rather positing new definitions, however, the lexicon quotes existing definitions from textual scholars as they appear in academic articles, monographs, and the like. The Lexicon was first developed in WordPress (2012 onwards), but has been redeveloped into a Jekyll website in 2020 to make it more sustainable, more citable, to improve collaboration, crediting, and versioning options, and to allow for more automation while also publishing the definitions as a dataset. Find out more on our About page.

About this Release

When I published the v1.0.0 release, Zenodo failed to archive it. The error message indicates that the issue is due to some of the changes I made to the .zenodo.json file.

Without 'related identifiers', the archiving still did not work. I am also removing languages now, to see if that combination works.

Adding all the other metadata fields broke the archiving again. The error messages seem to suggest that the problem was with the 'related identifiers' (because it was only after removing that field that the error messages started to become more detailed). Let's see if that does the trick.

Try 6 was a success! Now I am adding all the other additions to the zenodo file again, in the hope they don't break the archiving.

I noticed that since 'try 3', Zenodo's error messages were beginning to become more specific. My assumption that it required a 'type' for 'contributors' was correct, this was indicated in the error messages from try 3 onwards, and stopped appearing with try 5. But the latest error message now directed me to a typo in one of the orcids. This has now been fixed; fingers crossed.

After removing some of the new properties from the json file, I learned that Zenodo requires 'roles' for contributors (but not for creators). And that roles are designated with the 'type' property. So I added a 'researcher' role to all contributors. I am hopeful that it will work this time. If so, I may add the other new properties (that did not seem to make a difference until now) in a next and hopefully final patch.

Removing 'license', 'language', or 'related_identifiers' did not work; now trying 'keywords'. Although I suspect the problem is with the collaborators. But let's try this first just in case.

Hopefully this fixes the issue; if not I will continue to work on the file (producing new patch releases each time, to trigger archiving).

About this Release

With this release, I am finally removing the 'beta' identifier from the Lexicon of Scholarly Editing. After 13 years, it was high time to do so. When (after a long time of local development) I finally moved the Lexicon from its original WordPress installation to its current GitHub hosting, I opened a long list of issues that I thought still needed to be resolved to make the transformation complete. These issues were added to the 'v1.0.0' milestone. Some of these issues were closed in 2020, but many remained, and were tackled gradually over the years in between other professional obligations. Since the latest version (v0.4.1 -- August 2020), many more of these issues were closed:

  • #9 pagenumbers
  • #18 categories and related terms
  • #20 include all definitions from the old lexicon website
  • #22 what url to use?
  • #24 qtd. in references
  • #29 automatic repository deposits in Zenodo
  • #54 last-modified bug

One more milestone-related issue remained: #3 References -- but I now decided to remove this issue from the milestone, and get on with publishing the v1.0.0 release. The issue has received a 'help wanted' tag instead, and it will be tackled in due time.

Over the years, the gems used to build the website (and their dependencies) have also continued to update, which resulted in a lot of 'bundle updated' patch commits, to try to keep the lexicon up and running. In the last couple of months, the bundler was giving some issues, which meant that the website couldn't update anymore but I have now resolved this issue. The fix prompted some other parts of the website that needed to be updated to allow the website to continue to be deployed, and those have been fixed now too. A final thing that I still wanted to accomplish before publishing a new release was to add some more detail to the zenodo.json file, to hopefully improve the metadata on Zenodo. Having done that now, I am happy now to finally publish this long awaited release.
