Silence Parallel
This is a fork of GNU Parallel. It offers the the addition of not being
constantly annoyed by not have run the citation sub command.
The rationale behind this change is that it is not nice to force people
to type will cite when using a program for simple personal use or keeping
track of the number of times that you have use the program for personal
purposes.
This forks offers a parallel command which is silent. It won't count you
how many times you use it and it won't bother you constantly with logs
about citing nor require you to type "will cite" as a friendly program must do.
Other than that this fork remains fully compatible with the original with the
mayor difference that the "--citation" flag results in a NOOP instead of
ignoring other arguments or options.
However, if you intend to use the program for academic purposes,
you should follow the will of the author and cite the original project.
This is a great tool which deserves support and maybe one day the upstream
will make the program more friendly and this fork won't be needed.
This fork does not offer the 10 second install. Instead you should be able
to copy the required files from this repository and place them in your path.

If you do prefer to use the original project but you don't want to be
forced to type "will cite", here some tips to use original parallel.
- Use the "--will-cite" argument flag which will silence logs for a single execution.
- Create a "will-cite" file in parallel home where parallel home is one of the following:
- PARALLEL_HOME environment variable
- $HOME/.parallel
You can run something like this:
"mkdir -p ~/.parallel && touch ~/.parallel/will-cite".
Optionally if you already used parallel, you can remove the file
"runs-without-willing-to-cite" and free some precious 4KiB from your storage.

= Presentation of GNU Parallel =
GNU Parallel is a shell tool for executing jobs in parallel using one
or more computers. A job can be a single command or a small script
that has to be run for each of the lines in the input. The typical
input is a list of files, a list of hosts, a list of users, a list of
URLs, or a list of tables. A job can also be a command that reads from
a pipe. GNU Parallel can then split the input and pipe it into
commands in parallel.
If you use xargs and tee today you will find GNU Parallel very easy to
use as GNU Parallel is written to have the same options as xargs. If
you write loops in shell, you will find GNU Parallel may be able to
replace most of the loops and make them run faster by running several
jobs in parallel.
GNU Parallel makes sure output from the commands is the same output as
you would get had you run the commands sequentially. This makes it
possible to use output from GNU Parallel as input for other programs.

= 10 seconds installation =
For security reasons it is recommended you use your package manager to
install. But if you cannot do that then you can use this 10 seconds
installation.
The 10 seconds installation will try to do a full installation; if
that fails, a personal installation; if that fails, a minimal
installation.

Full installation of GNU Parallel is as simple as:

= Minimal installation =
If you just need parallel and do not have 'make' installed (maybe the
system is old or Microsoft Windows):

chmod 755 parallel
cp parallel sem
mv parallel sem dir-in-your-$PATH/bin/
= Installation on compute servers =
If you are developing your script to run on a remote server, that does
not have GNU Parallel installed, but you have it installed on you
development machine, then you can use `parallel --embed`.
parallel --embed > newscript.sh
Just edit the last lines of newscript.sh and copy it to the compute
server.
= Test the installation =
After this you should be able to do:
parallel -j0 ping -nc 3 ::: qubes-os.org gnu.org freenetproject.org
This will send 3 ping packets to 3 different hosts in parallel and print
the output when they complete.
