This release expands upon an existing feature for generating Python snippets from file selections to allow generating shareable "Collections" of files between users.

The new file-sharing system in the FMS File Explorer will allow for sharing what we have been calling "Datasets" (fixed, immutable sets of file metadata frozen at a point-in-time) and also a new, similar, idea more broadly described as a "Collection". These "Collections" will be a set of File Ids that will allow the File Explorer Service to narrow down the possible files queries that can be run against effectively preserving a file selection. The hope with this is that we will be able to hit at least three major use cases:

Quick file selection sharing (select files, right-click, select "Share", send FMS File Explorer URL to whoever)
Long-term file selection sharing. Whether to be used as a tiny URL of sorts in a paper or by other services like camera alignment to direct people to specific sets of files.
& as we do currently, programmatic users who would like their machine learning algorithms, for example, to be ran with the same set of file metadata each time

This release adds the ability to search by basic file attributes.

Previously, this application only allowed querying by Annotations. "Basic" file attributes like File ID, Filename, Date Uploaded were unable to be queried in this same way due to the sheer quantity of them since every file is likely to have a unique value for each of those attributes. Moreover, the way one would query an Annotation like by asking "What are all the files with Cell Line AICS-0?" does not align perfectly with how one would ideally query a file attribute. Filename is likely best queried by a partial match where the search query would match every file with the query present as part of the filename rather than matching the filename exactly, as though one were to ask "What are all the files with a Filename containing ?"

This release adds the limited ability to sort the file lists by an annotation.

This has been a feature on our minds for a while, and until recently, seemingly impossible given the current state of our software architecture. However, during a recent user request meeting, the group decided sorting is something they would mostly do with the subset of annotations (file attributes) that we know we can sort by. Clicking a column header will either allow you to sort or inform you of the annotations you are able to sort by.

Additionally, this release includes a bugfix for querying with a combination of filters and an annotation hierarchy that previously would not correctly apply the filters.

This release adds the ability to download a file from the details pane (right-hand sidebar of the application).

The ability to download files to local disk directly from the FMS File Explorer has been a long-standing work item. While we actively encourage people to use the "Open"/"Open in..." feature instead if feasible (i.e., you have direct access to the Isilon from your computer), the ability to download files does have some utility in the work-from-home-world. Particularly, it allows folks to only need to be on VPN to view data stored in FMS--no need to mount the Isilon.

The implementation only enables downloading files one at a time, and the button itself is relatively subtle. Screen Shot 2021-05-19 at 9 04 21 AM

Note! This feature will not prevent you from filling your local disk. E.g., it will not prevent you from attempting to download a 4TB file, even if you only have 20GB available on your local hard drive. Considering this download happens over the internet, downloading large data is not recommended for other reasons as well, 🙂.
